Beetroot is best known for its antioxidants and its cancer curing qualities. It is very easy to cultivate and is one of most grown vegetable in India as well as the world. Regionally in India beetroot is called by many names such as bita in Marathi, dumpamokka in Telegu, salada in Gujrati etc. Beetroot cultivation is a viable option for both home and commercial growers. Optimum profits can be made by the cultivator due to its demand and medicinal benefits. India is an agricultural country where 65 per cent population is dependent on agriculture. Vegetables have many important functions in peoples’ everyday life. Being nutritional benefit and of short duration, vegetable crops allow enough scope for increasing the intensity of cropping. Of the various salad vegetables grown, carrot, radish and beet are the important salad vegetables. Agriculture continues to be the mainstay of our economy as it occupies the central place in rural life. Horticultural sector is fast emerging and the most remunerative sector. Horticultural crops are characterized by high productivity, higher returns, and higher potential for employment generation and exports, comparatively lower requirement of water and easy adaptability to adverse soil and waste land situations. Vegetable cultivation is one of the important branch of horticulture.

India is the second largest producer of vegetables in the world. Root vegetables like Potato, Beetroot and Carrot (Hill and Plain) are sown in September to October in major growing district. In India Beetroot is mainly cultivated in Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, West Bengal and Maharashtra. The market growth is driven by the shifting preference from synthetic nitrates and nitrites to natural beetroot powder and other extracts across the meat industry worldwide. In addition, experts recommend the use of natural ingredients as an alternative to modern cosmetic products, including dry blush, for consumers with sensitive skin and allergies. This factor will push the demand for beetroot powder from skin care and other applications in the cosmetology sector over the upcoming years. With regards to the end-use industry, the food and beverage segment is expected to account for a major share by 2027. This is a result of the growing adoption of beetroot extract powder in place of carmine in producing sausages, owing to its ability to enhance their sensory appearance, flavour, colour, and overall acceptance. Furthermore, the accelerating consumption of beetroot juices to maintain a healthy weight, provide glowing skin, and promote heart health, among other benefits will add impetus to segmental expansion over the projected timeframe. However, there has been rising awareness about the benefits of beetroot smoothie for vasodilation, blood supply, as well as optimal supply of oxygen to the lungs. It can be used as highly anti-inflammatory ingredient in drinks and can naturally reduce blood pressure. Since maintaining heart and lung health is of utmost importance for consumers during the COVID-19 pandemic, the beetroot powder industry is likely to regain gradual traction over the coming years.
