Black pepper is a high yeild cash crop belongs to the agricultural industry in India. Black pepper is native to present-day Kerala, a state on the southwestern coast of India, and is extensively cultivated there and in other tropical regions. It has a worldwide export potential. mainly grown in Kerala, TamilNadu, Karnataka, Konkan, Pondicherry & Andaman and Nicobar Islands. India is first producer, consumer and exporter of black pepper in the world. Kerala itself produces 90% off total production of black pepper. This spice has good economic importance due to its earnings of exports from foreign exchange. This spice is also called as "Black gold" due to its international trade factor.Black pepper is the world's most traded spice, and is one of the most common spices added to cuisines around the world. Its spiciness is due to the chemical compound pipeline, which is a different kind of spicy from the capsaicin characteristic of chili peppers.

Black pepper is a flowering vine in the family Piperaceae, cultivated for its fruit, known as a peppercorn, which is usually dried and used as a spice and seasoning. The fruit is drupe which, when fresh and fully mature, is about 5 mm in diameter, dark red, and contains a stone which encloses a single pepper seed. Peppercorns and the ground pepper derived from them may be described simply as pepper, or more precisely as black pepper, green pepper or white pepper. Ground, dried, and cooked peppercorns have been used since antiquity, both for flavor and as a traditional medicine. It is ubiquitous in the Western world as a seasoning, and is often paired with salt and available on dining tables in shakers or mills. Black pepper is a plant of humid tropics requiring high rainfall and humidity. The hot and humid climate of sub mountainous tracts of Western Ghats is ideal for its cultivation. It grows successfully between 20° North and South latitudes, and, up to 1500 m above sea level.
