In India, Maize is grown throughout the year. It is predominantly a kharif crop with 85 per cent of the area under cultivation in the season. Maize is the third most important cereal crop in India after rice and wheat. It accounts for around 10 per cent of total food grain production in the country. In addition to staple food for human being and quality feed for animals, maize serves as a basic raw material as an ingredient to thousands of industrial products that includes starch, oil, protein, alcoholic beverages, food sweeteners, pharmaceutical, cosmetic, film, textile, gum, package and paper industries etc. Corn is largely cultivated crop in north India. Major Corn growing states are Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, MP, Bihar, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, and Punjab which together account for two-thirds of the total area and output of the crop. Among the specialty corns, sweet corn has gaining its importance in urban areas due to its taste and other uses for human consumption. But, non-availability of high yielding sweet corn varieties, the green ears of flint-grained local varieties which are relatively sweeter and taste better are also consumed as roasted ears. Driven by structural changes in agriculture and food consumption patterns, maize is bound to hold its share as an important cereal crop in future. In current scenario, the need is to focus not only on production and productivity but also on building a competitive maize supply chain. The study on maize is an effort to bring fore the global and domestic scenario of maize and issues confronting the maize supply chain.

The global corn market reached a volume of 1118 million metric tons in 2020. The corn market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.3?tween 2021 and 2026 to reach a volume of nearly 1524 million metric tons by 2026. India corn market is expected to grow at a formidable rate during the forecast period. Corn is the third most important crop in India after rice and wheat, which is used both as food and feed. Furthermore, growing popularity of nutritionally enriched products is driving the market over 2024. Popcorn is expected to grow at a fast pace during forecast period since it is one of the most common snack items in many parts of the country, particularly in cities and is liked due to its light, porous and crunchy texture. Moreover, the popcorn flour can also be used for preparing many traditional dishes. Based on end use, the market can be categorized into direct consumption, poultry & cattle feed, processed food and others. The poultry & cattle feed segment is anticipated to hold a substantial market share during the forecast period on account of the easy availability of corn in the country. The major drivers of the industry such as rising disposable incomes, increasing population, rising urbanisation, growing demand for sorbitol and starch, rising demand from the feed sector, and growing consumption demand are driving the growth of the industry globally.
