In India, The emery cloth market is growing due to their extreme hardness, natural minerals such as garnet or emery find limited use in products for wood-related applications, while crocus mineral is limited to use as a polishing agent because of its softness. There is high demand for sand paper products for finishing and smoothing layers in industries. Emery was also used for cleaning, as a means of removing rust from polished steel components. Both emery cloth and paper are still sold in hardware and do it yourself stores, but have been largely supplanted by the increased use of machine grinding to precision size, which has minimized or eliminated the need for hand-fitting; the widespread availability of powered hand tools employing sanding and grinding accessories such as flap wheels; and a shift to other forms of abrasive, such as aluminum oxide, aluminium zirconia and silicon carbide.The cloth backing makes emery cloth stronger in tension than sandpaper, but still allows a sheet to be conveniently torn to size. Emery paper, more commonly seen, has a paper backing and is usually a finer grit. Emery was considered a suitable abrasive for fitting work and the final adjustment of steel parts for a perfect fit. It had the advantage that, unlike harder abrasives, it was not considered to embed abrasive traces in the polished components afterwards.

The global abrasive market size was valued at INR 25630.11 Crores in 2020 and is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.2% from 2021 to 2028. Growth in the metal fabrication industry on account of the rising demand for pre-engineered buildings & components and developments in the manufacturing sector is one of the key driving factors of the market. The growth in the manufacturing sector of developing economies of Asia is boosting the demand for super abrasives. For instance, in April 2020, the government of India announced production-linked incentives for large-scale electronic goods makers for the next five years to attract investments in mobile phone manufacturing and electronic component units. Such initiatives are contributing to industrial growth in the country, thereby driving the overall market. However, the market growth is expected to be restrained on account of volatile raw material prices. Mass production of abrasives requires large amounts of raw materials, such as aluminum oxide. The prices of bauxite and other source minerals fluctuate significantly, owing to factors, such as varying transport costs impacted by fuel prices, thereby affecting the production cost and pricing of abrasives. Demand for abrasive cloth or emery cloth will increase with the development of the manufacturing sector mainly the wood and metal sub sectors.  These sub sectors are also the main suppliers of various goods to the construction sector. Since the construction sector is growing fast due to various development activities the growth of the metal and wood-manufacturing sector is inevitable.  Considering this situation demand for abrasive or emery cloth is forecasted to grow by 8% per annum.
