In India since there has been abundance of biomass in every part of the country, briquetting plants mushroomed in many parts of the country. The Government has also offered many incentives to the Industry in term of subsidies and tax concessions. All these factors fuelled the growth of Briquetting Industry in India. A briquette is a compressed block of coal or other combustible biomass material (e.g. charcol, sawdust, wood chips, peat, or paper) used for fuel and kindling to start a fire. coal briquettes have long been produced as a means of using up 'small coal', the finely broken coal inevitably produced during the mining  process. Otherwise this is difficult to burn as it is hard to arrange adequate airflow through a fire of these small pieces; also such fuel tends to be drawn up and out of the chimney by the draught, giving visible black smoke. The first briquettes were known as culm bombs and were hand-moulded with a little wet clay as a binder. These could be difficult to burn efficiently, as the unburned clay produced a large ash content, blocking airflow through a grate.The briquetting process is the conversion of agricultural waste into uniformly shaped briquettes that are easy to use, transport, and store. The idea of briquetting is using materials that are unusable, due to a lack of density, and compressing them into a solid fuel of a convenient shape that can be burned like wood or charcoal. The briquettes have better physical and combustion characteristics than the initial waste. Briquettes will improve the combustion efficientcy using the existing traditional furnaces, in addition to killing all insects and diseases as well as reducing the destructive fire risk in the countryside. 

The Global Biomass Briquette Market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 6.5% during the forecasting period (2021 - 2028). Large scale agricultural activities have resulted in the liberation of large volumes of residues. Rice husk, bagasse, coir pith, nutshells, and cotton stalks among others are the major agro residues produced in the world. These residues have been posing an environmental threat in the form of air pollution and surged the need for proper waste management methods. Biomass briquetting is a method of converting biomass into usable fuel blocks. Biomass includes agro residues, paper, and sawdust that is generated in bulk quantities in various agro-industrial activities. Briquetting is a densification process involving low-pressure compaction of agro residues into high-pressure fuel blocks, commonly referred to as biomass briquettes. These briquettes are considered effective substitutes for charcoal and are widely in use as an alternative fuel for coal, wood, and lignite across the world.

The growing demand for biofuel substitutes in industrial applications coupled with efforts to reduce the consumption of fossil fuels is the primary growth factor for the biomass briquettes market. Governments and environmental protection agencies are striving to reduce the use of fossil fuels and unrenewable energy sources to curb global warming and rising greenhouse gas emissions. Bio-briquettes are found as the sustainable alternative to coal in industrial heating applications and reliable energy sources. Other potential benefits of these blocks including high combustibility, low residue content, sulfur-free and economic factors are boosting the use of bio briquettes in these applications. the utilization of biomass briquettes is also beneficial to the environment in that it eliminates on-field burning of agro residues by providing an alternative market for commercial utilization as fuel.
