India is largest producer of ginger and is contributing 32.75 percent of total world ginger. Meghalaya is major ginger producing state and ranks second in the country after Kerala by contributing 19.6 percent of the National production. Other major ginger producing state of North Eastern region are Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Mizoram and Sikkim. Nowadays, there is great demand for organic products in developed countries. North eastern region is organic by default as there is low use of chemical fertilizers and agro-chemicals. So, there is much scope of quality organic ginger production and export earnings in the region. There is also vast potential of value addition. Linkage should be developed between farmers and corporate houses for marketing and processing of ginger in the region. It is mainly because of expansion of local demand that export pace has reduced in last couple of years.

The industry is further expected to grow at a CAGR of 6.4% over the forecast period of 2022-2027 to attain a value of over INR 29700.78 Crores by 2026. The extensive applications of ginger in various industries represent one of the key factors bolstering the market growth. For instance, as ginger has a peppery flavour with a strong aroma, it is an extremely popular dietary condiment used as a spice to flavour cookies, cakes and curry mixes in the food and beverage (F&B) industry. It is also used as a digestive aid for diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, and stomach upset occurring from motion sickness, pregnancy and cancer chemotherapy. This is positively influencing the sales of ginger in the pharma industry. It is one of the most used condiments in the Asian cuisines due to its various health benefits, pungent aroma, and peppery flavour. Ginger juice or oil is also finding increased applications in the cosmetics sector, owing to its anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative properties, which further controls the process of ageing.
