Onion is one of the important commercial vegetable crops grown in India. It is widely grown in different parts of the country. The main reason for low productivity in India is follow up of traditional cultivation methods and use of local varieties. In India Maharashtra is a leading onion growing state followed by Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Orissa, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Bihar, Haryana, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh.  Onion is grown widely in different parts of the country. It is important foreign exchange earning crop to the country. India produces around 168 lakh tons of onion annually ranking second in the world. India possesses many innate advantages over other onion producing countries and its large genetic base, varied soil and climatic conditions and skilled human power. So many farmers are involved in the traditional onion production in Raipur district, Karnataka state. Maharashtra ranks first in Onion production with a share of 28.32%. India. There is a lot of demand of Indian Onion in the world, the country has exported 15, 78,016.59 MT of fresh onion to the world for the worth of INR 2,826.50 crores during the year 2020-21. The major importer of onion are Bangladesh, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, United Arab Emirates, Nepal, Indonesia, Qatar, Vietnam, Social Republic, Kuwait, Oman, etc. The gap between supply of and demands for it always fluctuate. Availability of onion for domestic consumption depends upon total production and net export, correspondingly the price of onion is highly volatile. Therefore, government has to give more emphasis to increase the productivity of onion in India.

The regional market for onion is expected to develop as disposable income rises and demand for healthful ready-to-eat foods grows. The demand for onion is expected to increase significantly due to the growth in food and beverage industry. Onions have been found to have more antibiotics than penicillin, uremayocin and sulphate that cures tuberculosis, syphilis, and gonorrhoea. Unlike, seasonal availability of onions, this product is readily available throughout year and is not affected by any seasonal price change and this the major factor driving the markets growth. High demand for fresh onions coupled with low market awareness among consumers are the factors restraining the markets growth. Powder form has accounted for largest market share owing to the growing usage of dehydrated onion powder as a chief ingredient across a wide range of products such as pizza and burgers.
